Lawnboy Rope Starter

REWIND STARTER. To disassemble starter, first remove starter assembly from engine. Pull rope partially out of starter, remove rope handle and allow pulley to unwind slowly. Unscrew pulley retaining screw.

Re-move retainer (6), dogs (9), springs (8), brake spring (5) and washer (4). Wear appropriate safety eyewear and gloves before disengaging pulley from starter as spring may uncoil uncontrolled. Place shop towels around pulley (3) and lift pulley out of housing; spring and cup (2) may remain in housing or stay in pulley. Do not attempt to separate spring from cup as they are a unit assembly.

Inspect components for damage and excessive wear. Reverse disassembly procedure to install components.

Apply a light coat of grease to rewind spring and spring contact area on inside of pulley. Note that spring cup (2) will only fit in pulley if lugs are properly engaged.

To assemble pulley, spring cup and housing, install spring cup with spring in pulley and hold pulley so spring cup is on top. Place starter housing on top of pulley. Rotate pulley counterclockwise until spring tension is felt indicating inner end of spring has engaged spring anchor. Install dog springs (8) so long end is up and spring forces dog toward center of starter. Apply grease to ends of brake spring. Flanges of retainer must be to-ward rewind spring.

Tighten center screw to 70 in.-Ibs. (7.9 N.m). Rotate pulley counterclockwise until spring is wound tight. Let pulley unwind just un-til rope holes in pulley and starter hous-ing are aligned. Insert rope through holes and tie knot at pulley end. Attach handle to outer end of rope, then allow pulley to wind rope onto pulley.

When installing starter on engine, pull out rope so dogs engage starter cup and center starter beforre tightening starter mounting screws. Tighten starter mounting screws to 25 in.-lbs.
