Starter Rope Replacement
READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY
BEFORE ATTEMPTING ROPE REPLACEMENT
1. Remove cooling blower housing.
2. Place on bench with inside of housing facing up.

3. Bend tabs (A of Fig. 1 ) to vertical position, extra tabs are available on
housing in case of breakage.
4. Slowly and carefully lift pulley from housing. CAUTION: Spring is under tension. Wear eye protection and do not allow spring to jump from housing. As spring is being removed, study spring position for reinstallation.
5. Carefully remove pulley from spring, and spring from housing. Remove any
remaining rope from pulley. Clean, Inspect, straighten if necessary, and
lubricate spring.Clean housing interior.

6. Introduce either end of the spring from outside the housing through the housing spring hole (B of Fig. 2). Spring should enter the housing in such a way as to facilitate counter-clockwise winding.
7. Attach end of spring to pulley and replace pulley into housing.
Bend down tabs (A).
Note: Insure end of spring is attached prior to bending tabs.
8. Using the rewind starter tool as shown in Fig. 1, wind
spring into the housing
until the outside end of the spring approaches the housing spring hole (B).
Using pliers, lift and lock end of spring into housing spring hole.
9. Using old rope as a gauge, measure and cut new rope to length. Add 1" for
knots. Burn cut end with a match to prevent fraying and aid in insertion.
10. Using the rewind starter tool as shown in Fig. 1, wind
pulley counter-clockwise to fully wound position.
Back off one turn until eyelet in housing aligns
with hole in pulley. Use retension rod to hold spring tension against recoil housing rib as shown in Fig. 3.
11. Insert new rope through housing and pulley. A
straightened paper clip can be helpful in threading rope.

12. Tie a knot at the end of the rope at pulley end and pull rope snug,
seating knot into pulley (Fig. 3).
13. Attach handle as shown in Fig. 4.
Note: Thread rope through mower handle crossbar if applicable.

14. Apply pulling tension to rope and remove rewind starter tool.
Slowly allow rope to feed into housing.
15. Replace housing on engine. Inspect for proper operation.
If necessary, shorten rope from handle end.
