To replace the starter rope, proceed as follows: If the starter bracket has a "V' notch (V--Fig. T52), then the inner end of the rope is accessible and the rope can be replaced without disassembling the starter. Typical rope lengths are 65 inches (165 cm) and 98 inches (249 cm). If rope is unbroken, remove rope handle and let rope wind onto rope pulley. Note in Fig. T53 that inner end of rope was originally retained by a staple, while inner end on replacement ropes is inserted through a hole in pulley and knotted. Rotate pulley so that either the stapled rope end or knotted rope end is visible (Fig. T52) in the "V' notch. Pry out staple or untie knot and pull out rope. Rotate pulley counterclockwise until rewind spring is tight, then allow pulley to turn clockwise until rope hole in pulley is visible in "V' notch. Route new rope through pulley hole and tie a knot in rope end. Pull the knot into pulley cavity so rope end does not protrude. Allow pulley to wind rope onto pulley. Attach rope handle to rope end.

To disassemble starter, proceed as follows: If rope is unbroken, remove rope handle and let rope wind onto rope pulley. Drive or press out pulley spindle (14--Fig. T51) by placing starter over a deep-well socket and forcing spindle into socket. Turn spring housing (6) so strut aligns with legs on brake spring (2). Prevent housing rotation by inserting a pin or rod through strut hole and into gear teeth as shown in Fig. T54. Remove pulley assembly from starter bracket. CAUTION: Do not allow spring housing to separate from rope pulley until any spring tension has been relieved.

Hold spring housing (6---Fig. T51) against rope pulley so spring housing cannot rotate. Withdraw pin or rod in spring housing strut (Fig. T54) and allow spring housing to rotate thereby relieving rewind spring tension. If necessary, separate spring housing from rope pulley. Do not attempt to remove rewind spring from spring housing. The spring and housing are available only as a unit assembly. If rope replacement is necessary, note in Fig. T53 that inner end of rope was originally retained by a staple, while inner end on replacement rope is insetted through a hole in pulley and knotted. Pry out staple, if so equipped, to release rope. Route new rope through pulley hole and tie a knot in rope end. The knot must be positioned in pulley cavity so rope end does not protrude.

To assemble starter, proceed as follows: Do not lubricate any starter components. When viewed from gear side of rope pulley, wind rope onto pulley in a clockwise direction. Install brake spring (2--Fig. T51) on rope pulley while being careful not to distort spring legs. If removed, place spring housing on rope pulley while being sure inner spring end engages anchor on pulley. See Fig. T55.

Rotate spring housing four turns counterclockwise (Fig. T56) then align legs on brake spring with hole in strut.

Prevent housing rotation by inserting a pin or rod through strut hole and into gear teeth. If so equipped, install clip (7--Fig. T51), key (10) and pawl (9). Install rope pulley assembly in starter bracket while inserting brake spring legs into slots in starter bracket (Fig. T57). Route outer rope end past rope guide and install rope handle. Withdraw pin or rod in strut hole. The strut will rotate until it contacts starter bracket. Press or drive in a new pulley spindle (14--Fig. T51).
