Tecumseh Horizontal Pull Rope Starter

STYLIZED STARTER.

The stylized starter is shown in Fig. T46. Typical rope lengths are 69, 98, and 114 inches.

To disassemble starter, remove rope handle and allow rope to wind slowly into starter. Position a suitable sleeve support under pawl retainer(8) and using a 5/16 inch punch, drive pin (11) free of starter. Remove brake spring(9) retainer(8), pawls(6) and springs(5). Wear appropriate safety eyewear and gloves before disengaging pulley from starter as spring may uncoil uncontrolled. Place shop towel around pulley and lift pulley out of housing; spring should remain with pulley.

Inspect components for damage and excessive wear. Reverse disassembly procedure to install components. Rewind spring coils windin counterclockwise direction from outer end. When installing pulley, be sure inner end of rewind spring engages spring retainer adjacent to housing center post. Install the pawl and spring end (E-Fig. T47) forces the pawl toward the center of the pulley.

Place the retainer on the pulley hub so tabs (T_Fig. T48 are inside ends of pawls.

Install pin(11-Fig. T46) so top of pin is 1/8 inch below top of starter. Driving pin in to far may damage retainer pawl.

With starter assemblied, except for rope, install rope as follows: Rotate pulley counterclockwise until tight, then allow to unwind so hole(H_Fig. T49) in pulley aligns with rope outlet.

Insert rope through starter housing and pulley hole, tie a knot in rope end and allow rope to wind onto pulley. Install rope handle.
